The European Union is looking for the best places for innovation. Cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants can apply and win considerable prize money.

Barcelona is a people’s city. At least this is the name of the program which made the catalan capital win the European Capital Innovation Award in 2014. The program allows the use of open data for individuals and companies, smart lighting and mobility in the city as well as a better use of ICTs to boost innovation. This made Barcelona the European innovation capital and provided it with 500,000 euros prize money.

Now the European Union is looking for a worthy successor and is raising the prize money to 950,000 euros. Until November 18th 2015 (17:00 Brussels time) cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, which are part of the Horizon 2020 program, can hand in an application. Candidates will be evaluated recording to their implementations since January 2012 and their plans to provide a rich ecosystem for innovation.
